Within the programme "Cooperation Development Research", which is financed by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research, cooperation projects between Austrian higher education institutions/research institutions and institutions in countries of the Global South are supported. In autumn 2021 twelve new projects have started their activities. They have been successful in the programme’s second Call in 2020: 12 out of 43 applications have been selected and will be supported with an overall budget of 500,000 euros. Former OeAD scholars are involved in the following selected projects:
1. Capacity building in Genomic data analysis and strengthening partnership between institutions from the South and North
The project coordinator is the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU); the project partners are the International Livestock Research Institute in Kenya and the Mekelle University in Ethiopia. The project coordinator at Mekelle University, Kahsa Tadel GEBRE, is a former OEAD scholar.
2. Development and evaluation of granules containing Lactobacillus harboring EV71’s cellular receptor
The project coordinator is the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU); the project partner is the Ho Chi Minh City University of Science, Vietnam. Among the project participants is the former OeAD scholar Hieu TRAN-VAN.
3. Inventorying biodiversity in the tropics: Establishing a DNA-barcoding pipeline for characterizing and monitoring Zambia’s biodiversity
The project coordinator is the University of Graz. The project partners are the Natural History Museum Vienna and the University of Zambia, which project coordinator Cyprian KATONGO is also a former OEAD scholar.
4. Turning fruit and vegetable wastes into livestock feed: Sustainable feed resources with functional properties
The project partner is the former OeAD scholar Mubarik MAHMOOD, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore-Pakistan; the project coordinator is the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna.
5. Analysis of Water Level Fluctuations and Implications on Local Livelihoods in the Great Rift Valley Lakes of Kenya | GreatLakes
The project coordinator at the partner University is the former OeAD scholar Luke Omondi OLANG, Technical University of Kenya. The project coordinator is the Austrian University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU).
6. High yielding and acid tolerant maize hybrids: sustainable solutions for maize farming under acidic Ultisols conditions of the Nigerian rainforest agro-ecology
The project coordinator is the former OeAD scholar Chinedu Emmanuel EZE, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. The project partner is the Austrian University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU).
7. Traditional Mongolian Veterinary medicine plants VetNa
The project coordinator is the former OeAD scholar Gunbileg DISAN, Mongolian Academy of Sciences. The project partner is the Austrian University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU).
8. Rural Womens Right to Access to Land in North-West Ethiopia: Challenges and Limits
The project coordinator at the partner University is the former OeAD scholar Ayelech Kidie MENGESHA, Debre Markos University in Ethiopia. The project coordinator is the Austrian University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU).
9. Socioeconomic and genetic monitoring for conserving the cultural inheritance in the indigenous “Lobi” cattle of southwestern Burkina Faso
The project coordinator is the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna. The project coordinator of the project partner, Institut du Developement Rural (IDR), Burkina Faso, is Albert SOUDRÉ, who is also a former OEAD scholar. among the project participants are the former OeAD scholars Dominique OUEDRAOGO and Bienvenue Lassina ZOMA.
All of these projects contribute to the analysis and solution of local challenges as well as to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in 2015.
