The Eurasia-Pacific Uninet (EPU) is a network of Austrian universities, universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen) and other research institutions with member institutions in Central Asia, East Asia, South Asia and the Pacific region, which this year can already look back on 20 years of activity in the field of international scientific cooperation.
The network was founded in 2000 by the EPU’s current honorary president, Univ. Prof. Dr. Brigitte Winklehner, University of Salzburg. In 2012 Dr. Wolf-Dieter Rausch followed as president of the Eurasia-Pacific Uninet, which is supported by a committed and international team in Austria, China and Mongolia.
Since 2011 the EPU network office has been located at the OeAD. In this function the OeAD is primarily responsible for the management of project funding and scholarships.
The 38 Austrian member institutions, among which almost all Austrian universities and universities of applied sciences, are represented in a board of trustees that meets at regular intervals. Exchange with the international partner institutions takes place in plenary sessions, the last one in May 2019 in Vienna.
With around 180 member institutions in Belarus, Bhutan, China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, India, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Nepal, Austria, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan the network promotes multilateral scientific cooperation and exchange between its members. The Eurasia-Pacific Uninet is the biggest university network of its kind in Europe. The EPU’s aim is to facilitate, promote and intensify scientific, economic and cultural relations between Austria and the network’s members as well as contacts with partner institutions, government departments and embassies.
The main focus is on the exchange of young scientists of all disciplines. With its long-term funding by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) the Eurasia-Pacific Uninet supports PhD and postdoctoral stays of young scientists from China and Mongolia at Austrian partner institutions and the implementation of innovative projects of international teams on the basis of bilateral and multilateral partnerships with all member countries.
