Written application

Information: The first step is to apply to the OeAD, the application period starts between the beginning and mid-December of every year. This includes a formal written application (online) and a pre-selection interview with each applicant in front of an expert commission in Austria.

Formalities: Online application starting in December (registration required)

Schedule

  • 31 January: Closing date for submitting your electronic application
  • February / March: selection interviews will take place. (For detailed information about this step of the application process please refer to Fact Sheet 1 (PDF).) (German)

Please note that admission to the general application process only means that you have passed the formal examination and the pre-selection interview. However, this does not mean that your application has already been successful at this point and that you will get your desired lectureship position. The host institution decides about this after the position-specific advertisement. The OeAD-GmbH has no influence on these decisions!

Selection interview

In the first or second week of March you will be informed about the outcome of this first phase of the application process. If you have qualified for the programme on the basis of your written application and the results of the pre-selection interview, the phase of job-specific application and placement at the host universities will now begin.

Job-specific application

Beginning to mid-March

All applicants who have passed the formal examination and the pre-selection interview are invited to submit a job-specific application.

In this third step you can apply for up to four positions that become available. To do so, parts of your online application will be activated for you to edit again and you can add the information relevant for the job-specific application. You will have approximately a week to work on your application and select the positions.

Selection at the host universities

Beginning of March to end of May

We endeavour to ensure the greatest possible transparency for all applicants in this placement process. This requires a complex procedure. After you have submitted your job-specific application the applications will be forwarded to the respective host universities in several stages. There the applications are reviewed according to internal criteria and a selection will be made.

The OeAD only acts as an intermediary in this part of the application process. The host universities themselves make the final decision on the appointment. The OeAD-GmbH has no influence on these decisions!

Job offer and acceptance

Beginning of April to end of May

If you are selected by a university, you will receive a job offer from the OeAD by email. To keep delays to a minimum in the placement process we ask you to accept or decline the offer within 48 hours.

After accepting the offer from a host university you will start preparing for your work as an OeAD lecturer.

Advance visit

May/June

Before actually starting work all newcomers to the programme have the possibility to make an OeAD-funded advance visit to their future host department. This advance visit not only serves to get to know the teaching staff but is also to enable a handover in direct exchange with the previous lecturer. For this reason it is advisable to plan your advance visit to take place before the end of the semester.

Introductory seminar (OeAD)

July

In the first week of July a two-day introductory seminar for all newcomers to the programme takes place in Vienna. The seminar offers a general introduction to the programme, its funding guidelines and service facilities. It also offers the possibility to connect with other lecturers and to meet the OeAD staff responsible for the programme in person.

Certificate course (University of Vienna)

Module 1 of the certificate course ‘Field of Expertise: Lectureship Abroad’, which is mandatory for all newcomers to the lectureship programme, starts immediately after the OeAD seminar. The certificate course is held by the University of Vienna’s Postgraduate Center.

This training programme consists of three modules that build on one another. All programme participants can complete module 2 and 3. All modules take place in July of each year.
