1. Curriculum Vitae

Jan Valošek, Ing., graduated from Biomedical engineering at the Technical University Ostrava, Czechia, and is currently enrolled in the Neuroscience PhD study program at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of Palacký University Olomouc, Czechia. His research is focused on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the spinal cord and brain. Particularly, he focuses on quantitative MRI techniques such as diffusion weighted imaging, functional MRI and magnetic resonance spectroscopy, which are used for mapping of tissue microstructure and metabolism to enhance diagnosis of distinct diseases.

Within an international research group (Czechia, Austria, USA), Jan Valošek works on improving of diagnosis and clinical management of patients with degenerative cervical spinal cord compression using advanced quantitative MRI techniques.

2. Reflection

The five months internship at the Medical University of Vienna allowed me to collaborate on cutting-edge research in a field of MRI. I had an opportunity to learn how to acquire and analyze data from high-field MR scanners (3T and 7T), and I could conduct measurements using methods, which are not available in my home country. I have been involved in deployment of new techniques for in-vivo mapping of brain metabolism and functions as well as new methods for spinal cord imaging. I will use knowledge gained during the internship in my future research and career to further deepen my MRI expertise. Last but not least, Vienna is a beautiful cosmopolitan city with a lot of to explore.
