APPEAR

Austrian Partnership Programme in Higher Education and
Research for Development

The overall objective of APPEAR is to strengthen the scientific foundation and institutional capacities in higher education, research and management in the partner countries through academic partnerships with Austrian higher education institutions and master’s and PhD scholarships. Furthermore, APPEAR aims at increasing the commitment to international cooperation and development at Austrian higher education institutions.

APPEAR is a programme of the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC) with the aim to realise its strategy for support of higher education and research for development on an academic institutional level.

Migration, Gender, and Household Dynamics: An Ethnographic PhD Study from Rural Armenia

Sinara Navoyan recently completed her doctoral studies at the University of Vienna. Her research explores how international labour migration reshapes everyday life, gender roles, and power relations within rural Armenian households. Based on ethnographic fieldwork the study examines how seasonal migration to Russia sustains local livelihoods while transforming social and economic responsibilities among those who stay, behind who are mostly women.

Seda Adamyan at the Young ÖGHMP Symposium

Seda Adamyan recently took part in the Young ÖGHMP Symposium in Vienna, presenting her research on Dirofilaria and Leishmania in Armenian mammals. The event gathered emerging scientists to discuss advances in microbiology, hygiene, and preventive medicine. For Seda, it was a valuable chance to share her findings, connect with experts, and explore new approaches for studying vector-borne zoonotic diseases in the South Caucasus.

Event Summary: 15th S-DHG Forum 2025

Around 60 participants from funding agencies and organisations across Europe and around the world came together for the 15th S-DHG Forum 2025 – the Forum of the Cooperation for Sustainable Development in Higher Education Group (S-DHG), which took place in November 2025 at OeAD in Vienna. The meeting focused on a central challenge: how to communicate the value of higher education cooperation with the Global South during a time of increasing global uncertainty, shrinking budgets, and shifting political priorities.

Workshop Recap: Project Work in Conflict-Affected Countries

On 22 November 2025, OeAD hosted the workshop ‘Project Work in Conflict-Affected Contexts’ as part of the 9th Austrian Development Conference in Innsbruck, Austria. Caroline Paparu and Hafte Tesfay shared insights from their project work in Uganda and Ethiopia that were followed by interactive discussions. Overall, the workshop underscored that successful cooperation in conflict-affected contexts requires flexibility, ethical sensitivity, transparent communication, and long-term, trust-based partnerships rooted in local realities.

Sunday Asasio presents paper at International Conference on Materials Science and Smart Materials

At the MSSM2025 conference in Vienna Sunday Asasio presented ‘Assessment of Renewable Energy Resource Potential for Hybrid Electrification: A Case Study of Kasenyi Fish Landing Site, Uganda’. The conference provided a global platform for advancing research in materials characterization, design, and sustainable high-performance material development.
