On August 30, 2023, the University of Desarrollo (UDD) in Santiago de Chile held a ceremony to award Austria with the UDD Global Award to acknowledge Austria’s contribution to global education in 2022. Thanks to the Austrian partner universities and the Ernst Mach programme, UDD students have had the opportunity to experience academic exchange in Austria. The prize was accepted by Daniela Boltman from the Austrian Embassy in Santiago de Chile.
UDD has established collaboration agreements at university level with Austrian institutions since 2008, including student, professor, and staff exchange. Out of 202 international cooperations, there are four partner universities in Austria: The University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol, the Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences, the Johannes Kepler University Linz, and the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria.
Over the years, UDD has hosted almost 70 students from Austria for one or two semesters. Courses can be taken in English, but students are also immersing themselves in Chilean culture and learn the language. In contrast, UDD has sent 79 students to Austria, of which 43% have received a scholarship from OeAD, mainly the Ernst Mach Grant for studying at an Austrian university of applied sciences.
According to Carla Jiménez, Director of International Relations at UDD, all Austrian partners have demonstrated a strong commitment to internationalisation and cross-border collaboration: “Their dedication to fostering global connections and promoting cultural exchange has been instrumental in providing valuable opportunities for our students and enhancing our international academic programmes. We greatly appreciate the support and collaboration of our Austrian partners in creating a vibrant and diverse learning environment for our students. Together, we are able to broaden horizons, foster intercultural understanding, and prepare our students for success in an increasingly interconnected world where language skills and global and intercultural competencies are highly appreciated.”
We are grateful to UDD for acknowledging Austria’s efforts in internationalisation, hope to continue this fruitful and successful cooperation and are looking forward to giving even more students the opportunity to study in Austria and vice versa.
