Comics a useful format for science communication

The Austrian Academy of Sciences awarded three science comics aimed at 10-14 year old children and young people to get them excited about science.

Three comics were recently awarded prizes as part of the competition for science comics organised by the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW). The aim is to communicate research processes and results to children and young people in an entertaining way and to provide insight into the work of researchers.

The selected comics and topics

  • "Hanna and the Call of the Mountains" by Michael Meyer and Michael Schneider deals with the topic of climate change.
  • "Raven, Glory and Rusty Mushrooms" by Nina Hable is about biodiversity and the influence of humans on ecosystems.
  • "The discovery of the filter bubble" by Johanna Meier focuses on smartphones as a "data collector".
