I am Mohamed Salem, 26 years old, from Egypt. I am proud to say that I come from a family that values education and hard work. After attending highly competitive STEM high schools in Egypt, where only the most qualified students are admitted, I developed a passion for technology and engineering. During my studies, I discovered a particular love for mechatronics. Subsequently, I received a full scholarship to study mechatronics engineering at Nile University, where I faced many challenges and obstacles, including a rigorous curriculum and intense pace. However, I remained determined to succeed and worked daily to achieve my academic goals. My passion for robotics, automation, and control systems helped me to overcome these challenges, and I graduated with honors. Although I was proud of my achievements, I knew that my journey was far from over, and I sought to continue pursuing my passion for mechatronics and robotics.

After completing my bachelor's degree, I was fortunate to be awarded a University of Klagenfurt Technology Scholarship from the University of Klagenfurt (AAU) and OeAD to study for a master's degree in ICE, autonomous systems and robotics in Austria at AAU. It was a significant milestone in my academic journey, and I was excited about the opportunity to study in a foreign country, meet new people, and experience a different culture. However, moving to a new country was challenging. I had to adjust to a new culture, language, and academic expectations. Despite facing obstacles, I was determined to overcome them and succeed in my studies. I worked tirelessly, working long hours in the lab and studying hard for my exams.

My time at Klagenfurt was a genuinely transformative experience.

I was exposed to cutting-edge research in robotics and artificial intelligence, and I could take courses and work on projects that deepened my understanding of these areas. The professors and faculty members were some of the most knowledgeable and supportive individuals I have ever met, and I am grateful for their guidance and mentorship.

One of the highlights of my time in Klagenfurt was the opportunity to work as a research intern in the transportation informatics lab at the university under the supervision of Prof. Kyamakya Kyandoghere. It was a valuable experience that allowed me to apply the knowledge and skills I had gained in a real-world setting. I also had the privilege of interning and writing my master's thesis at Infineon, a renowned semiconductor and smart chips manufacturer.

The culmination of my diligent efforts, under the esteemed supervision and direction of Prof. Kyamakya representing the university, resulted in a gratifying outcome, and I was graded for my cutting-edge master’s thesis project and also graduated with a grade "1.0" – the highest possible grade in the Austrian grading system. I felt an incredible sense of achievement and pride, knowing that I had accomplished something truly remarkable.

Working at Infineon, as a lecturer, and pursuing a PhD degree

Now, I am settled in Austria, working as a Senior Specialist in R&D Codesign Digitalization and Artificial intelligence at Infineon Technologies Austria, one of the world's biggest semiconductors and smart chips manufacturers. In this role, I am responsible for developing state-of-the-art AI systems that will shape the future of technology. I am also working as a lecturer at the University of Klagenfurt, where I teach and mentor students who are eager to learn about the exciting field of robotics and artificial intelligence. Additionally, I am pursuing a Ph.D. in Artificial intelligence for electronic systems which is yet another exciting chapter in my academic journey.

As an international student, I found Klagenfurt to be a welcoming and inclusive community. People were friendly, kind, and helpful, which made my transition to a new country much smoother. I appreciated the university's efforts to promote diversity and inclusion, and I was part of a global community that valued education and innovation. I have enjoyed the local culture, the region's stunning natural beauty, and the vibrant international student life.

It has been an enriching and unforgettable experience, and I am grateful for every moment.

Finally, I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to the OeAD organization and its team for allowing me to pursue my master's degree in Austria. The experience has been transformative and has provided me with numerous prospects for career advancement. The unwavering assistance and support extended by the OeAD team during various situations, even those not directly related to their mandate, are beyond commendable. I am eternally thankful for their encouragement and assistance. I am committed to inspiring future generations of students to follow their academic aspirations with passion and perseverance, thereby giving back to society.

As I bring this chapter of my life to a close, I cannot help but reflect on the past two years. It seems like only yesterday when I was unable to speak German, communicate with people daily, or even drive through the bustling streets of the city. The mere thought of achieving these milestones seemed like a distant dream, but here I am today, having made the impossible possible. Looking back on this incredible journey, I am filled with a sense of overwhelming gratitude for the experiences, challenges, and growth that have brought me to where I am today. It is a reminder that with dedication, persistence, and an unwavering belief in oneself, anything is possible. So, I humbly share my words of wisdom with those navigating through tough challenges: never surrender your dreams. Have faith in yourself and your potential, and don't hesitate to reach out for support when the going gets tough. By pouring in your heart and soul, staying committed, and embracing risks, you can accomplish anything you aspire to. Remember, every hurdle you overcome is a testament to your resilience and strength, paving the way for a brighter tomorrow.

Based on an agreement with the University of Klagenfurt, the OeAD is partner within this programme, since 2019.
OeAD publishes the call for applications, accompanies the selection process, handles the scholarships, and supports the selected scholarship recipients before and during their stay in Austria.
