60 Years OeAD: Off on an adventure! We are writing history …

Four young people stand in front of a historic square in Málaga.
Lina, Manuel, Lisa and Martin have a common history: The four of them volunteered abroad within the framework of the European Solidarity Corps (ESC).

The ESC is a funding programme of the European Union and is managed by the OeAD in Austria. It supports voluntary work of young people in non-profit organisations in Austria and abroad as well as local solidarity projects of young people.

Lina was a volunteer in Romania for seven months. She supported disadvantaged children in hospitals and schools and enriched their everyday lives with fun and games.

Manuel spent ten months in Spain helping in an organisation that cares for adults with autism. It was a very enriching experience for him.

Lisa's volunteer work also had a lasting impact on her. She volunteered with the European Network on Independent Living and learned a lot about the European disability rights movement: “At first I was worried whether I would be up to the challenge but in retrospect I can only say that going to Brussels was one of the best decisions of my life. I emerged from the experience much more confident and stronger and I definitely wouldn't want to miss it.”

Anyone who enjoys exploring another country, making friends and learning new things should do a volunteering placement, Lisa recommends.

Martin volunteered in Spain and supported his host organisation in the production of videos and social media appearances. Martin is a wheelchair user but this did not stop him from going on this adventure. Accompanied by an assistant and with the support of the host organisation on site and his sending organisation in Austria he was able to successfully complete his volunteer placement.

He documented his experiences and impressions in a video that encourages all young people to also do such a volunteering assignment:
