The Franz Werfel scholarship has been in existence since 1992. Since then, a considerable number of literary scholars from different parts of the world have studied or conducted research in Austria with this programme. Wendelin Schmidt-Dengler was the academic director of the Franz Werfel scholarship programme for many years.
Within the framework of his work as professor at the University of Vienna he accompanied and supervised the emerging “Werfel community”. Since Wendelin Schmidt-Dengler's death in September 2008 an author reading at the annual Franz Werfel conference has been dedicated to his memory.
