The OeAD, as the national agency for education and internationalization, and the Austrian Development Agency (ADA), the agency for Austrian development cooperation, support high-quality research projects between Austria and priority countries of the Austrian development cooperation with the APPEAR program. In the first ten APPEAR years, around 20 million euros in funding were implemented in seven application rounds, which led to a strong network of the scientific institutions involved. By the end of what is now the third program phase in November 2027, a further 18.7 million euros are to be invested in sustainable academic partnerships with long-term effects. In this way, Austrian Development Cooperation makes a relevant contribution to evidence-based development and to the step-by-step, partnership-based implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The latest call will start on March 1, 2021 and will be open until the end of June 2021. Researchers at universities in Austria and in the priority countries of Austrian the development cooperation (Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Uganda, Mozambique, Bhutan, Palestine, Armenia, Georgia, Albania, Kosovo, Moldova) can submit demand-oriented and innovative cooperation projects in research, teaching and university management. Further application rounds are planned for the years 2022 to 2024. The third phase of the program will last seven years.
