Water is an important element to adapting to climate change. Clean water and sanitation is also one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by all 193 member countries of the United Nations General Assembly.

With the advent of the coronavirus hand hygiene has also become increasingly important as an essential prerequisite for curbing the spread of infectious diseases. In many parts of the world, however, people lack the safe water and washing facilities they need to protect themselves and their communities.

The OeAD has many projects and activities related to water, ranging from an APPEAR project on aquaculture in East Africa to Young Science ambassadors who provide information on water research at Austrian schools.
