Dominique Ouédraogo conducted his PhD at BOKU University as part of the APPEAR funded project LoCaBreed “Local cattle breed of Burkina Faso – characterization and sustainable use” that was carried out from 2016 to 2020, focusing on the design and implementation of community-based breeding programmes in Burkina Faso. After sucessfully completing his PhD in December 2020 Dominique was appointed Assistant Lecturer in animal husbandry at the University Centre of Ziniaré in June 2021. This newly established university, which opened in 2019, focuses on agricultural sciences. In July 2022, just one year later, Dr Ouédraogo successfully passed his habilitation with distinction as Assistant Professor of Animal Breeding and Genetics. In 2023, he was appointed as the Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry of the University Center of Ziniaré. As head of the department, he manages administrative and organisational affairs, lectures and supervises students. He is also co-supervisor of master students from Joseph Ki-ZERBO and Nazi BONI universities.
In addition to this demanding position, Dominique is also a key member in several research projects. He is a work package leader in the recent APPEAR funded project LocaBreed2.0 “Advancing local capacities for livestock breeding practice and research in Burkina Faso” (2022-2025). In 2022, he was granted an OeAD project “Strengthening smallholders breeding capacities towards sustainable pig production in Burkina Faso”, financed by the Cooperation Development Research Programme (KoEF). The so called PigFaso project aims to support pig breeders in peri-urban areas of Burkina Faso.
In addition to his network with his former universities in Austria (BOKU University and VetMeduni Vienna), Dominique also collaborates with universities in West Africa and Europe. He has strong ties with the University of Abomey-Calavi in Bénin and Belgian higher education and research institutions for the implementation of a Belgian funded research project on the management of West African endemic Djallonké small ruminant genetic resources.
Very passionate and committed, Dominique is a shining example of the contribution of Austrian Development Cooperation through APPEAR to capacity building in the Global South.
