The newly published article contains the description of a new bacterial species as well as the classification of the genus Aquirufa and other genera into suitable families. The publication was produced as part of the Aquirufa Sparkling Science project.
The new species was discovered by pupils of the BORG Nonntal in the Leopoldskroner Weiher (Salzburg). The bacterium was later also detected in Lake Hallstatt and the Vöckla. In addition to cooperation partners from the German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures and the Global Underwater Explorers Austria, students from the BORG Nonntal, the BG Vöcklabruck and the BRG Schloss Wagrain are involved in the publication in a variety of ways. The pupils selected bodies of water, collected water samples there, carried out measurements, created bacterial cultures, worked in the laboratory at the Research Institute for Limnology in Mondsee and created a name for the new species.
The article was published in the journal "Archives of Microbiology" in volume 206 and is available in the full version. Further information
