The City-Tree-Soil project investigates the effects of the urban environment on tree growth and soil carbon. It is working together with several schools in Vienna and Innsbruck, but is also looking for interested individuals who would like to take part in the research.
The amateur researchers only need a cell phone with which they can scan a QR code. A total of 51 trees are distributed in Vienna and 33 trees in Innsbruck and can be recognized by a metal ring (dendrometer). Instructions for the measurement can be found directly on the tree. The value read is sent to a database via QR code. In this way, periods of stress for the trees (e.g. drought) can be recognized. In addition, the tree growth can be viewed almost “live” by everyone.
In addition to gaining scientific knowledge, an important concern of the project is to emphasize the importance of urban trees for a healthy microclimate and thus for all of us, as well as to make the public aware of the necessary functions of the soil.
