Based on the South African citizen science project ‘Diamonds on the Soles of their Feet’, researchers Jacqueline Goldin and Carolina Suransky have prepared their findings in two publications, which are now available under an open access licence. The project involved researching water quality in the rural Limpopo region together with over 400 pupils.
The article ‘Pedagogy with a heartbeat: The transformative potential of citizen science in education’ was published in the journal ‘Perspectives in Education’ and deals with the interactions between education, society and nature that joint research into the natural environment can have.
The paper ‘Decolonisation of education through citizen science: Slow science, not slow violence. The case study Diamonds on the Soles of Their Feet’ reflects on the project's approach using a case study. It focuses in particular on the roles of scientists and co-researchers and the handling of power imbalances.
