On June 17, 2024, the final event of the Sparkling Science project “TRA:WELL” took place at BOKU.

The project began in September 2022 at BOKU and concluded with a well-attended and lively event. Just as colorful and participatory as the project itself, the event program included: the project team presented initial scientific results, students presented a manifesto for active and safe mobility for children and young people, and experts and stakeholders engaged in a panel discussion.

The project was conducted in cooperation with three schools – AHS Korneuburg in Lower Austria and BRG19 in Krottenbachstraße and Billrothgymnasium in Vienna – and explored the relationship between active mobility, physical activity, and wellbeing. To this end, mobility and activity surveys were conducted with the students, experiments were carried out in the Virtual Reality Laboratory at BOKU, videos were made, and discussions on wellbeing and mobility took place. The close and important cooperation with the students and teachers is evident from the numbers: almost 40 appointments took place at schools over the course of the project.

The project’s results contribute to fundamental research in transportation studies and will provide important insights for developing better mobility solutions for children and young people. This is crucial not only for climate protection but also because many children and young people do not meet the WHO's physical activity recommendation (60 minutes of exercise per day). Promoting active forms of mobility, such as walking or cycling, can therefore serve as a lever to enhance the physical health of children and young people.
