Graduating from Nile University in Egypt with a bachelor's degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Mohamed El Bahnasawi then completed a master’s degree in Autonomous Systems and Robotics at the University of Klagenfurt. Currently, Mohamed El Bahnasawi holds the position of Project Researcher and Lecturer at the University of Klagenfurt, where he is also pursuing a PhD as part of the EU project BATCAT. This project, a collaboration among 18 partner organizations across 9 European countries, is funded by the EU's Horizon Europe program and led by the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU).

At the heart of BATCAT is the goal of transforming battery manufacturing. The project is developing a digital twin framework that integrates cutting-edge AI and data analytics to significantly enhance the efficiency and sustainability of battery production processes. Mohamed El Bahnasawi's role primarily involves conducting research that supports this innovative framework.

Mohamed, tell us briefly about your research. Why are you interested in this particular research, what do you find so exciting about it, what do you want to achieve and why?

My research mainly focuses on utilizing Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) techniques, to pioneer solutions in digital twin technology, logical reasoning, machine translation, and applications of large language models. My fascination with Generative AI began during my master's studies and was profoundly influenced by working as a student researcher under the mentorship of Univ.-Prof. Kyandoghere Kyamakya. His guidance deepened my understanding and fueled my enthusiasm to explore this innovative domain further. During my master's thesis work in collaboration with AT&S AG in Leoben, I applied Generative AI to optimize and automate hardware development processes, achieving exceptional results that heightened my interest in this field.

This experience was significant, setting the stage for my current research endeavors, where I strive to advance the development of cutting-edge technologies. I believe that Generative AI is crucial in today's technological landscape due to its potential to revolutionize various industries by automating complex tasks, enhancing creativity, and providing innovative solutions to longstanding challenges. My goal is to advance these applications through careful research and innovative approaches, contributing to more sustainable and efficient technological solutions.

Can you mention any other outstanding activities during your studies or professional career?

During my studies, I was always eager to expand my knowledge of AI technologies, not only through university courses but also through self-learning. Alongside my academic pursuits, I worked as a student researcher and tutor at the university, where I taught tutorials on machine learning for four semesters. This role allowed me to publish significant research contributions to the academic community, further consolidating my passion for AI.

One of the most significant milestones in my master's degree was applying my acquired knowledge during my thesis and internship work. By bringing innovative solutions to the industry, I was able to develop my professional identity and enhance my personal skills. This made me a distinguished student, recognized for my contributions and achievements. As a result, I was honored with the Huawei “Seeds for the Future” Best Performer Award and graduated from my master's program with distinction.

Which impact did your education/scholarship in Austria have on your personal and professional development?

Studying at the University of Klagenfurt was a transformative experience that significantly shaped my life and career. It allowed me to discover my passion and identify the career path that best suits my interests and skills. The combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience provided through the program helped me develop both professionally and personally.

Receiving the scholarship from OeAD was a life-changing experience. Not only did it eliminate financial burdens, enabling me to focus entirely on my studies and professional growth, but it also expanded my network. Being recognized as an OeAD scholar was widely appreciated, opening doors to numerous opportunities and connections within the academic and professional community. This financial support and recognition allowed me to immerse myself fully in my academic and research activities, laying a strong foundation for my future career.

Which experiences were particularly important for you? Is there any relevant anecdote or story you would like to share?

Before receiving the scholarship, I was struggling to balance my studies at another university with a job in a food delivery company. This situation was stressful and halted my ability to concentrate fully on my academic pursuits. The scholarship provided me with the freedom to leave that job and dedicate myself entirely to my studies and personal development.

This shift allowed me to excel academically and professionally, ultimately leading to various internship opportunities and deeper integration with my academic community and colleagues. Reflecting on this journey, I realize that without the support of the scholarship, I would not have been able to reach my current position and continue to advance in the field of AI.

How did your studies in Austria change or influence your life?

My first visit to Austria was as an exchange student in 2019. After returning home to complete my bachelor’s studies, I always dreamed of coming back. It was a great privilege to pursue my master’s studies in Austria, where each day brought new experiences that profoundly shaped my personality and changed my life.

Living in Austria, I became more knowledgeable, constantly learning from new people and diverse cultures. The University of Klagenfurt, with its vibrant academic community, provided numerous opportunities for growth and interaction. Additionally, Klagenfurt’s beautiful natural surroundings significantly reduced any stress, making it an ideal environment for both study and personal well-being.

The social life and activities available made me feel at home. I made new friends and connected with people who helped me navigate this new environment, making my life easier and more enjoyable. Another advantage of living in Austria is its central location in Europe, which allowed me to travel and experience different countries and cultures easily. These travels broadened my horizons and enriched my understanding of the world.

What kind of networks or cooperations could you establish between your home institution and the host institution in Austria?

As an alumnus of Nile University and a former OeAD scholar, I actively engage in promoting connections between my home institution and the University of Klagenfurt. I help students from Nile University learn about the valuable scholarship opportunities offered by OeAD, providing guidance to make the process smoother for them.

What are your plans/hopes for the future?

I believe that my knowledge has not yet reached its peak, and I am eager to continuously learn about new technologies that are rapidly evolving every day. Through ongoing learning and research, I aim to stay at the forefront of these advancements. My hope is to consistently contribute innovative ideas to the research community, aiding in the discovery of better solutions and the development of new technologies.

I aspire to a future where my work leaves a significant impact, contributing to a more technologically advanced and sustainable world. The influence of the scholarship and my master's studies on my life has been profound, and I hope to see more opportunities like this available to students worldwide. By supporting and guiding them, I hope they can find their passion and make meaningful contributions to their fields, just as I have been able to do.
