Stability of S&T cooperation also guaranteed in 2023

The Scientific & Technological Cooperation programme, which began in the late 1960s, remained successful in 2023.

Scientific and Technological Cooperation (S&T cooperation) promotes bilateral projects for all disciplines based on international treaties and memoranda of understanding in order to facilitate research stays. The aim is to establish new international research collaborations and sustainable partnerships. The number of international co-publications in the field of RTI with Austrian participation should also be increased through this programme. One of the main objectives is also to promote young, particularly female researchers in research projects. In 2023, 57% of participating researchers were male and 43% female, which shows that this funding is effective. Overall, the exchange is balanced with 52% incoming and 48% outgoing mobilities.

In principle, there are bilateral projects in S&T cooperation; every two years there is a multilateral call for countries from the Danube region, with eight countries in the last call. The projects run for two years. For Austrian researchers, travel and accommodation costs as well as project-related material costs are funded. The maximum duration of stays for incoming and outgoing researchers is three months.

In 2023, there were 350 bilateral projects with 18 countries as part of S&T cooperation. The most exchanges were with the Czech Republic with 46 projects, Slovenia with 34, China with 30 and India and Serbia with 27 projects each. There are 2,643 researchers in these 350 projects. On average, around 8 people worked on a project.

Total outgoing mobilities: 312

  • University of Vienna 46 mobilities
  • Vienna University of Technology 39 mobilities
  • University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences 29 mobilities

 Incoming mobilities: 365

  • University of Belgrade and University of Ljubljana: 23 mobilities
  • Brno University of Technology: 21 mobilities
  • University of Zagreb: 19 mobilities
  • University of Novi Sad: 14 mobilities

The most strongly represented subject areas:

  • Natural sciences with a total of 290 mobilities
  • Technical sciences with 170 mobilities
  • Humanities with 67 mobilities
