APPEAR

Austrian Partnership Programme in Higher Education and
Research for Development

The overall objective of APPEAR is to strengthen the scientific foundation and institutional capacities in higher education, research and management in the partner countries through academic partnerships with Austrian higher education institutions and master’s and PhD scholarships. Furthermore, APPEAR aims at increasing the commitment to international cooperation and development at Austrian higher education institutions.

APPEAR is a programme of the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC) with the aim to realise its strategy for support of higher education and research for development on an academic institutional level.

Alumni Talk with Zipporah Gichana: Advancing Aquatic Resource Management

Join us on 15 October 2026 at 18:00 at the OeAD where Zipporah Gichana will share her personal and professional experiences as a doctoral student at BOKU University. Drawing on her involvement in international research projects, she will speak about aquatic resource management and sustainable aquaculture systems in East Africa, and international research collaboration, including her role as an Africa-UniNet representative.

Edu4GEO2 Partners Present Research at World Bank Land Conference

Researchers and practitioners from around the world gathered at the World Bank 2026 Land and Property Research Conference to discuss current challenges and innovative solutions in the land sector. Edu4GEO2 project partners contributed to the exchange by presenting their research on geomatics education and women's land rights in Ethiopia.

Edu4GEO2 | Report on the 3rd project year

The second cohort of the Master’s in Geomatics began in October 2026, with most courses delivered online through team teaching. In cooperation with DMU and two Austrian universities, practical trainings were delivered to Ethiopian land administration experts. DMU also offered targeted land-rights courses for local female farmers. Key teaching and research infrastructure purchased in Austria was delivered to Ethiopian partners.

Strengthening the AEEM Programme and Alumni Network in East Africa

For more than ten years, the International Joint MSc Programme in Aquatic Ecosystems and Environmental Management (AEEM) has trained experts in aquatic and environmental management and strengthened academic partnerships between East African and Austrian universities. A workshop on 24 April 2026 in Ethiopia was dedicated to reflection, networking, and strategic dialogue on the future of the programme and its growing alumni network.
