The International Day of Mathematics was celebrated worldwide on 14 March - an occasion to present a Sparkling Science project from this subject area today and to make mathematics visible as an interdisciplinary science.
The ‘MatheConnect’ project explores how maths lessons can be made relevant to life and society through interdisciplinary topics. At the centre of the project are students of a secondary school who actively participate as citizen scientists in the development and evaluation of teaching materials. Through interviews, group discussions and a public survey, they identify socially relevant topics that are then linked to mathematical content.
The close collaboration between the researchers at the University of Klagenfurt and the young people enables an innovative perspective on the design of maths lessons in the 21st century. As an international co-operation partner, the University of Dundee is also contributing its expertise in data collection and task development.
The project shows how maths lessons can be linked to current topics that meet both the requirements of the curriculum and the interests of the pupils, and how learners can be actively involved in the research process.
