Deficit, dialog or participation - which of these three main models of science communication is best suited to citizen science? It is easy to assume that the participation model is the most appropriate. However, the new paper by Julia Lorke, Heidi Ballard and Lucy Robinson uses the example of the citizen science format BioBlitz to show that the reality of citizen science communication is more complex. The results of their research should help project participants to become more aware of the different types of science communication and to make their design decisions accordingly.
