Joint family activities are not only fun, but also strengthen the sense of community. They can also support current citizen science projects and contribute to scientific research. If you are still looking for ideas for joint family leisure time on the weekends and 8th June or in the first weeks of the summer vacations, you are sure to find what you are looking for at the Citizen Science Award! In this competition, five research projects from different scientific fields invite families to participate in research either outdoors in nature, in the (small) city or online from home until July 31.

Here's how

Participating in the Citizen Science Award is very easy: All projects offer digital participation opportunities via apps and online platforms that can be used anywhere in Austria.

You can participate in these projects as a family:

  • Colorful Soil (Bunter Boden): documenting plastic waste in soils and agricultural land.
  • City Layers: explore (small) urban environments and thus contribute to urban design
  • The ABC of dialects (Das ABC der Dialekte): transcribe 100-year-old handouts of a dialect dictionary
  • Online memorial book (Online-Gedenkbuch): research biographies of NS displaced persons
  • PLASTIC.ALPS: Research plastic pollution in nature

Material prizes await the most committed families! Not only parents with their children, but also grandparents with their grandchildren or aunts and uncles with their nieces and nephews can participate.

The prizes will be awarded at the ceremony, which will take place during the Young Science Congress on October 19 at the Institute of Science and Technology (ISTA) in Klosterneuburg (Lower Austria).
