On March 22, 2023, the new training series for contact persons will start with two lectures at the intersection of Citizen Science and science communication.

Julia Metag will kick off the training series with a lecture on "Science Communication Research and Citizen Science: Formats, Trends and Problem Areas. Julia Metag is a professor of communication science at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster. Her research focuses on science communication and political communication. She is co-director of the Swiss Science Barometer, on the advisory board of the German Science Barometer and co-editor of the journal "Studies in Communication and Media" (SCM).

In her presentation, Julia Metag explores the question of what science communication is, how it has developed in recent years, and what role Citizen Science plays in it. Against the backdrop of digitization, the challenges of science communication will be addressed before discussing what is meant by Citizen Science, how different formats can be characterized and how Citizen Science fits into the context of science communication. In addition, individual Citizen Science formats will be briefly presented.

In a second presentation, Marika Cieslinski and Walburg Steurer, staff members at the OeAD Center for Citizen Science, will show points of connection to Austria. Why are Citizen Science and science communication relevant in this country? Since when has Citizen Science existed in Austria? Important stations, actors and developments will be traced.
