In the context of the 7th Austrian Citizen Science Conference 2022 in Dornbirn, staff members of the OeAD Center for Citizen Science and other members of the working group "Citizen Science at/with Schools" from the University of Vienna and the University of Innsbruck organised the workshop "Citizen Science - Research with Schools' - A Reality Check of the Tips & Recommendations of the Brochure". The aim was to discuss with the participants different aspects on citizen science and schools mentioned in the brochure "Citizen Science - Research with Schools. Basics, recommendations and practical tips for joint projects" in order to improve it in the future.
The reality check
Participants reflected on a number of questions: Were important aspects overlooked? Where can they be supplemented? In the form of a world café, the participants analysed the topics "added value", "anchoring citizen science" and "project management". In the course of the workshop, there was lively discussion and one or the other missing aspect was brought forward.
The results
The results have been published in the conference proceedings under the title "The booklet "Citizen Science - Research with Schools" – Does it withstand the critical eyes of the citizen science community?".
Abstract: Citizen science leads the way for promising and innovative forms of cooperation between science and education. In our conference workshop we aimed at performing a reality check on the booklet ‘Citizen Science – Research with Schools’ by focussing on three main topics: implementation, added value, and long-term integration. The results of three roundtables confirm the potential for a steady growth of the topic, far beyond national borders.
