Expertise

The OeAD began its activities more than sixty years ago with mobility programmes for students. In selected fields the OeAD acts as an organisation of experts and provides support in shaping the education sector. As an agency of the Republic of Austria the OeAD thus contributes to inclusive, equal and high-quality education.

Development research

The OeAD makes an important contribution to raising awareness of development policy issues with the APPEAR programme financed by the Austrian Development Cooperation (OEZA) and the management of scholarship programmes. On one hand this involves supporting cooperation in research, teaching and management between Austrian higher education institutions and universities and scientific institutions in the Austrian Development Cooperation’s priority countries and on the The Africa-UniNet platform promotes cooperation and participatory research projects between Austrian higher education institutions and African universities. Numerous public relations activities – from subject-specific events to radio programmes in the OeAD podcast series “Welt im Ohr” (“World in Your Ear”) communicate the importance of development research for the gradual implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The OeAD is a partner in the European network Euraxess – Researchers in Motion. This portal supports mobility and careers of researchers and thus contributes to Europe’s role as an excellent location for scientific research.

The European higher education area

The aim of the Bologna Process is the standardisation and thus comparability and mutual recognition of higher education degrees throughout Europe. The Bologna reform is essential for the European higher education area. To support the reform processes at the higher education institutions the European Commission has created the National Bologna Experts project, which is managed by the OeAD’s Bologna Service Point.

Higher education marketing

As an agency for education and internationalisation the OeAD supports the higher education institutions’ internationalisation strategies and the global orientation of corresponding activities. In addition to the comprehensive support of national, European and international scholarship and funding programmes this also includes the international presentation of Austria as a location for research and science. The aim of Austria’s international positioning in higher education is to make the broad spectrum of study, teaching and research opportunities as well as academic cooperation known internationally.

The basis for sustainable knowledge transfer is an increase of quality and transparency. The development of transparency tools such as the Europass and the European and National Qualifications Frameworks (NQF) intends to support the mobility of learners across Europe and to improve the comparability of educational options in Europe.

Validation of transversal skills across Europe – TRANSVAL-EU

The TRANSVAL-EU project addresses the complex issue of validation of transversal skills. TRANSVAL-EU wants to explore innovative approaches for the validation of transversal skills acquired through non-formal and informal learning (VNFIL) in five pilot countries – Austria, Italy, Lithuania, Poland and Belgium.
