From OeAD scholarship to global mountain collaboration

Fernando Ruiz Peyré completed his PhD in Innsbruck in 2014, supported by the North-South-Dialogue scholarship, which fostered early collaborations beyond Europe. After nearly a decade as Assistant Professor at the University Innsbruck, he is now Junior Group Leader at ÖAW’s Institute for Interdisciplinary Mountain Research. His work on social-ecological transformations links European research with Global South partners, most recently through Highlands.3, a global initiative co-creating knowledge for sustainable mountain futures.

Improving genetic biocontrol | ArmBioClimate | Report on 1st project year | April 2023 - March 2024

Remarkable progress has already been made in achieving the APPEAR ArmBioClimate ("Strengthening genetic Biocontrol capacities under Climate Change in Armenia") project's objectives during the first reporting period.With the launch of a new master’s programme in Environmental Protection and Biosecurity at Yerevan State University, the project takes a major leap in tackling climate-related health and environmental challenges in Armenia. Through curriculum reform, pioneering genetic research on jackals, and strong local and international collaborations, the initiative is shaping a new era of biosecurity education and research.

The APPEAR project, CAST Mozambique ("Capacity Building for Sustainable Rural Tourism in Mozambique") is paving the way for sustainable rural tourism through strong academic partnerships and targeted capacity-building efforts in higher education. From curriculum needs analysis and stakeholder engagement to the launch of a multilingual project website, its first year laid a solid foundation for deeper impact and innovation in the years ahead.

BioGold | Report on the 1st project year

The project aims to combine biosorption and chemical remediation techniques to treat contaminated wastewater and tailings, and rehabilitate contaminated soils, thereby safeguarding vulnerable ecosystems around artisanal gold mining (ASGM) areas in Uganda. The biochar composites will be developed from locally available biomass to make them suitable for remediation of the soils for agricultural purposes.

GIRT | Report on the 3rd project year

GIRT’s third project year was dedicated to analysing the qualitative research phase in Ethiopia and Mozambique. Once interviewing was completed at all four study sites, a preliminary assessment of the data was conducted. Altogether, more than 400 interviews with female and male residents in informal settlements and slums had been conducted by researchers, as well as PhD students and research associates affiliated with the project. In a joint effort, the project team conceived a master plan for transcribing, translating and coding all interviews.
