Dr. Yinager Dessie Belay, a former APPEAR scholar and BOKU graduate, is a senior macroeconomist, financial sector reform leader and seasoned diplomat. He has over two decades' experience in shaping economic policy and institutional reform in Ethiopia. His career has spanned central banking, development planning, international economic cooperation and high-level diplomacy, with sustained engagement at ministerial, board and head-of-state levels.

Yekunoamlak Alemu: Green Skills for TVET Trainers in Ethiopian Polytechnics

Yekunoamlak Alemu is an OeAD alumnus, a senior staff member at Addis Ababa University, and a visiting scholar at the University of Klagenfurt. He was successful in the latest APPEAR Call and, since March 2025, has been implementing the project "Capacity Development of Trainers on Greening TVET in the Polytechnic Colleges of Ethiopia".

Summer Course at Université Nazi BONI explores innovations in animal breeding and genetics

In July 2025, Université Nazi BONI (UNB) in Burkina Faso hosted an international summer course titled 'Animal Breeding and Genetics: New Approaches in Europe and Africa‘, financed through the LoCaBreed2.0 project. The course aimed to strengthen local capacities in animal breeding research and practice, while also highlighting the urgent need for sustainable genetic improvement that is tailored to local contexts.

From OeAD scholarship to global mountain collaboration

Fernando Ruiz Peyré completed his PhD in Innsbruck in 2014, supported by the North-South-Dialogue scholarship, which fostered early collaborations beyond Europe. After nearly a decade as Assistant Professor at the University Innsbruck, he is now Junior Group Leader at ÖAW’s Institute for Interdisciplinary Mountain Research. His work on social-ecological transformations links European research with Global South partners, most recently through Highlands.3, a global initiative co-creating knowledge for sustainable mountain futures.

From Genetic Research to Environmental Impact: Dr. Priscilla Nyadoi’s remarkable journey

Dr. Nyadoi Priscilla is a trailblazing Ugandan scientist and OeAD Scholarship alumna who studied population genetics of Tamarindus indica L. at Austria’s AIT and the University of Vienna. She earned her PhD from Makerere University in 2011. Today, she serves as Deputy Director at Uganda Martyrs University and is the Chairperson of the Organization for Women in Sciences for the Developing World (OWSD) Uganda National Chapter. A dedicated advocate for science and conservation, she also serves on national and international environmental boards, including NEMA and IUCN-CEM.
