The speaker, Paul Yillia – a seasoned scientist, policy specialist, and international advisor – shared insights from his academic journey and professional career. He reflected on his doctoral studies at the Vienna University of Technology, his work with international research organizations, his role in co-founding The Energy Nexus Network (TENN), a regional renewable energy ecosystem hub in Sierra Leone, and his perspectives on global energy developments. Summer Course at Université Nazi BONI explores innovations in animal breeding and genetics

In July 2025, Université Nazi BONI (UNB) in Burkina Faso hosted an international summer course titled 'Animal Breeding and Genetics: New Approaches in Europe and Africa‘, financed through the LoCaBreed2.0 project. The course aimed to strengthen local capacities in animal breeding research and practice, while also highlighting the urgent need for sustainable genetic improvement that is tailored to local contexts.

From OeAD scholarship to global mountain collaboration

Fernando Ruiz Peyré completed his PhD in Innsbruck in 2014, supported by the North-South-Dialogue scholarship, which fostered early collaborations beyond Europe. After nearly a decade as Assistant Professor at the University Innsbruck, he is now Junior Group Leader at ÖAW’s Institute for Interdisciplinary Mountain Research. His work on social-ecological transformations links European research with Global South partners, most recently through Highlands.3, a global initiative co-creating knowledge for sustainable mountain futures.

At the International Conference on Social Work and Social Development in June 2025 in Uganda, APPEAR scholar Charles Rutikanga presented powerful findings on the lives of street children in Kigali. His study reveals not only the deep vulnerabilities these children face—poverty, exclusion, and abuse—but also their remarkable resilience and urgent calls for reintegration and support.

From Genetic Research to Environmental Impact: Dr. Priscilla Nyadoi’s remarkable journey

Dr. Nyadoi Priscilla is a trailblazing Ugandan scientist and OeAD Scholarship alumna who studied population genetics of Tamarindus indica L. at Austria’s AIT and the University of Vienna. She earned her PhD from Makerere University in 2011. Today, she serves as Deputy Director at Uganda Martyrs University and is the Chairperson of the Organization for Women in Sciences for the Developing World (OWSD) Uganda National Chapter. A dedicated advocate for science and conservation, she also serves on national and international environmental boards, including NEMA and IUCN-CEM.

Pauline Macharia: On the Nexus between Migration and Environment - from Theory to Practice

After earning her PhD from Vienna Technical University in 2021, Pauline Macharia shifted her career path from academia to international development. She joined the International Organization for Migration in Sierra Leone exploring the nexus between human mobility and climate change. Drawing from her own experience as a student migrant, she now advocates for youth empowerment and safe, regular migration pathways to help others avoid the dangers of irregular migration.
