Francis Musyoka finished PhD on Sustainable Land and Water Management

How can we enhance agricultural sustainability while safeguarding water resources? In his PhD at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU), Francis Kilundu Musyoka applied advanced hydrological modelling to assess the impact of sustainable land management practices. His work provides critical insights for improving water quality and resilience in agro-ecosystems.

From Genetic Research to Environmental Impact: Dr. Priscilla Nyadoi’s remarkable journey

Dr. Nyadoi Priscilla is a trailblazing Ugandan scientist and OeAD Scholarship alumna who studied population genetics of Tamarindus indica L. at Austria’s AIT and the University of Vienna. She earned her PhD from Makerere University in 2011. Today, she serves as Deputy Director at Uganda Martyrs University and is the Chairperson of the Organization for Women in Sciences for the Developing World (OWSD) Uganda National Chapter. A dedicated advocate for science and conservation, she also serves on national and international environmental boards, including NEMA and IUCN-CEM.

Event Report | APPEAR in practice 21 – Women’s Right to the City in Ethiopia and Mozambique

The 21st edition of the APPEAR in practice series, which took place on 10 June 2025, focused on gender-sensitive urban transformation in informal settlements and slums in Ethiopia and Mozambique. The event presented key results from the ongoing GIRT project – Strengthening Research and Educational Competences of HEIs for Gender-sensitive Urban (InfoRmal Settlement) Transformation –, a collaboration between universities in Ethiopia (Addis Ababa University, Bahir Dar University and Mekelle University), Mozambique (Lúrio University) and Austria (University for Continuing Education Krems). The project examines the housing and living conditions of women in the rapidly urbanising environments in Ethiopia and Mozambique, with the aim of strengthening the research and teaching capacities of the participating institutions.

Florence Nansumbi presents research at the EGU General Assembly 2025 in Vienna

Florence Nansumbi, an APPEAR-funded doctoral researcher, participated in the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2025, held at the Austria Center Vienna from 27 April to 2 May. The annual conference, one of the most prominent gatherings in the geosciences, brought together scientists from around the world and offered a vibrant forum for academic exchange in Earth, environmental, and planetary sciences.

Henok Marie Shiferaw presented research at 2nd Southern African Geotechnical Conference

He presented his work titled “Repeatability of Triaxial Tests and Reproducibility of Shear Strength Parameters” at the Second Southern African Geotechnical Conference, held from 28–30 May 2025 in Durban, South Africa. The conference brought together a diverse group of researchers, practitioners, consultants, and contractors from across South Africa, as well as keynote speakers from around the globe.

Gerald Kwikiriza publishes papers on impacts of aquaculture on native fish species in Uganda

Since 2022 Gerald Kwikiriza is a PhD candidate at the Institute for Integrative Nature Conservation Research, BOKU University. His research investigates the ecological and genetic impacts of aquaculture on native tilapia species in Uganda’s lake systems. He has recently published two papers.

COVIOCRIM | Report on the 1st project year

The project Countering Violent Crime against Women and Girls in Georgia (COVIOCRIM) aims at building a professional network of “first responders” in order to effectively and sustainably address the challenges of violence against women and girls (VAWG) in Georgia. The project will implement interactive and interdisciplinary training programmes, expand academic qualification opportunities, and establish a Legal Clinic in Tbilisi to provide victims of VAWG with accessible and immediate support. The first year focused on conducting regional training sessions across Georgia in the cities of Batumi, Zugdidi, Borjomi, Telawi, Gori, and Tbilisi.
