GIRT | Report on the 1st project year

The APPEAR project GIRT specifically looks at women’s daily lived experiences in informal settlements in Ethiopia and Mozambique. The project will build capacity in essential transdisciplinary methodologies in the partner universities, which will empower them to function as catalysts of change. In close partnership with local stakeholders, GIRT project partners will co-produce and share new, locally specific knowledge on real world problems and learn how to apply it to improve female informal residents’ living conditions on the ground.

Clean and prosperous Uganda | CPUg | Report on the 1st project year

CPUg team members have been hard at work trying to make Uganda “cleaner and more prosperous”, as its project title explicitly states. The project is aimed at improving fecal sludge and solid waste management capabilities across the country, with a particular focus on the Imvepi refugee settlement in the northwest part of the country; urban and suburban settings within Wakiso District; and 2-3 selected CDM composting plants throughout the country. The consortium has been working autonomously on its diverse work packages, while collaboration and communication have been pivotal to galvanize efforts in areas where the respective work packages intersect.

APPEAR in practice_15: Transdisciplinary approaches for university-community cooperation

Project partners from BOKU Vienna, Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU), Tbilisi State University (TSU), and IMC FH Krems presented their project, its results and outcomes and the network they established in the Caucasus region. Furthermore, recent PhD graduate and APPEAR alumni Lela Khartishvili from Georgia and current APPEAR scholarship holder Tigran Keryan from Armenia introduced the recently published manual for university lecturers.

APPEAR in practice_4

The art of creating spaces for rural and urban communities - Examples from Nicaragua and Palestine: The two appear projects RURAL_DEV in Palestine and URBAN_MANAGUA in Nicaragua both aim at enhancing the local communities' quality of life through spatial planning measures for rural and urban environments, respectively. Similarities and differences in the projects’ approaches shall be identified and the limits and possibilities for social and political changes be discussed.
