SOAA Project - Advancing Organic Agriculture in Armenia

The SOAA team is pleased to share updates on project progress, highlighting key developments in strengthening organic agriculture in Armenia. The Rector of ANAU visited BOKU University in Vienna, reconnecting with partners, exploring their experimental station, and reinforcing institutional ties. A training on education quality standards brought BOKU’s expertise to ANAU. At Chir’s House, a unique workshop combined an excursion and a sujukh-making master class, offering full immersion into Armenia’s organic and traditional food culture. Through global partnerships, hands-on learning, and knowledge exchange, SOAA continues to foster a more sustainable and innovative agricultural sector.

Investigating Microplastics in Lake Victoria, Uganda

Timothy Omara, an APPEAR scholar and PhD candidate at BOKU University, presented his research on microplastic pollution in Uganda’s Lake Victoria at the ANAKON conference in March 2025. As part of the APPEAR-funded ECSDevelop project, his study investigates the sources, seasonal variations, and removal of microplastics, contributing valuable insights into environmental sustainability.

Strengthening Biocontrol and Climate Resilience: A Partnership Between BOKU and YSU

Ugandan-Austrian University Cooperation - Information and Networking Meeting

The networking meeting on 16 January 2025 at Kyambogo University in Uganda marked a significant milestone in the ongoing collaboration between Ugandan and Austrian universities. The event began with the national anthems of Uganda, Austria, East Africa, and Kyambogo University, setting the tone for an inspiring gathering. Among the distinguished guests were Dr. Simone Knapp, the Austrian Ambassador to Uganda, and Dr. Eli Katunguka-Rwakishaya, Vice Chancellor of Kyambogo University. The meeting brought together around 80 scholars, alumni, and staff from various Ugandan institutions.

Simegn Kassa Alamirew, a distinguished lecturer at Bahir Dar University, has dedicated over a decade to academia, specializing in social anthropology. In December 2024, she completed her PhD research on “Dietary Behaviour of Women of Reproductive Age in Ethiopia: Socio-Cultural Factors and Care for Women“ at the Institute of Development Research, BOKU University, Vienna, under the supervision of Prof. Stefanie Lemke and funded by APPEAR.
