Paper presentation at a conference for sustainable development in dryland environments

APPEAR scholarship holder Sonnia Musyoka as part of her doctoral work, presented a paper at the Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development in Dryland Environments, that was held at Umma University, in Kenya between 19thand 23rd November 2018. The conference provided an excellent platform for the academia from around the world to engage with the industry, innovators, policy makers, value chain developers, farmers, and service providers among others so that higher education in Africa contributes to solving the problems of natural resources governance in the era of climate change.

PhD Research on aquaculture systems in Kenya

APPEAR scholarship holder Zipporah Gichana, as part of her doctoral work, presented a paper entitled “Effect of Different Biofilters on Performance of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in a Small-Scale Recirculating Aquaculture System” at the 6th Conference of the Pan African Fish and Fisheries Association, held from 24th to 28th of September 2018 in Malawi. The conference theme was “African fish and fisheries: diversity, conservation, sustainable management and development”.

PhD research on participatory approaches to curriculum development in higher education in Armenia

This summer APPEAR scholarship holder Hasmik Hovakimyan started her empirical data collection for her PhD research and helped support the APPEAR project BOAA. She started with getting acquainted with the organic sector and its stakeholders. To do so she held a series of participatory focus groups discussing various themes relevant to the project.

Scholarship holder participated in summer school "Rooting research in the Palestinian context"

For Hada it was an opportunity to witness participatory research by the research groups from Palestine, Jordan and Lebanon, as a method applied in different settings. The discussion contributed to her understanding of knowledge production practices at higher education institutions, which she is focusing on in her PhD research. It also added to her understanding of the importance of the critical stance in social science research. Hada also acted as an interpreter for the summer school participants.

Scholarship holder Papius Dias Tibihika, as part of his doctoral work, presented a paper entitled “East African freshwater fish impasse: Molecular genetic diversity and differentiation of the anthropogenically threatened Oreochromis niloticus inferred from microsatellite genotyping” which took place in Entebbe. The conference (SIAL 8) was jointly organized by the Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Uganda (MUST) and Justus Liebig University Giessen, Germany (JLU) in Entebbe, Uganda from 29th of July to 3rd of August 2018 at Laico Lake Victoria.

How to implement transdisciplinarity in teaching? Experiences from Armenia and Georgia

APPEAR scholar Tigran Keryan from Armenia participated in the Pilot Transdisciplinary Case Study Courses in Armenia and Georgia in June-July 2018. These field courses, which involved Master, Bachelor and PhD students and teachers from the Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU) and Tbilisi State University (TSU) were the main outcomes of cooperation, trainings and experience exchange of the Caucasian universities with the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) and IMC University of Applied Sciences Krems. The goal of the courses was to use case study teaching format and to implement transdisciplinarity in teaching (TD) and interdepartmental cooperation in partner universities.
