Invitation to Alumni Talk with Zipporah Gichana

"From Austria to East Africa: Advancing Sustainable Aquatic Resource Management". Join us on 15 October 2026 at 18:00 at the OeAD. Zipporah Gichana will share her personal and professional experiences as a doctoral student at BOKU University. Drawing on her involvement in international research projects, she will speak about sustainable aquaculture, climate-smart environmental solutions in East Africa, and international research collaboration, including her role as an Africa-UniNet representative.

Dr. Gichana is Lecturer and Chair of the Department of Environment, Natural Resources, and Aquatic Sciences at Kisii University, Kenya. Her academic and research work focuses on sustainable aquatic resource management, circular waste systems, ecosystem-based aquaculture, and climate-smart environmental solutions. Combining international research collaboration with locally grounded approaches, she contributes to innovative and sustainable responses to environmental and food security challenges in East Africa.
Since completing her PhD studies at BOKU University in 2019, Dr. Gichana has established an impressive academic career marked by leadership, interdisciplinary research, and international cooperation. She teaches within the International Joint MSc Programme in Limnology and Wetland Management and is actively involved in several regional and international research initiatives, including APPEAR, KoEF, and Africa-UniNet projects. Additionally, she serves as the Kisii University representative to the Austrian-African Research Network Africa-UniNet, strengthening institutional and international academic partnerships.

In her talk, Dr. Gichana will share insights into:
•    her academic and professional journey from Kenya to Austria and back,
•    the impact of her Austrian education on her personal and professional development,
•    sustainable aquaculture and climate-smart environmental solutions in East Africa,
•    international research collaboration and her role as Africa-UniNet representative 
•    intercultural exchange and global academic cooperation.
The talk will also highlight how international mobility, research collaboration, and higher education partnerships can contribute to sustainable development, innovation, and capacity building across continents.
