Lecture on gender and human rights at the Medical University of Vienna by APPEAR scholarship holder

Participation in Winter School 2018 "Science meets Practice"

In January 2018 Tigran Keryan from Armenia participated in the Transdisciplinarity Lab (TdLab) Winter School 2018 "Science meets Practice" organized by ETH Zurich which took place in Wislikofen, Switzerland. The goal of the TdLab Winter School "Science meets Practice" is to offer scientists the knowledge and experience to generate and cultivate a fruitful dialogue with people outside of academia.

Project meetings, workshops and public lecture of SHE-GE project

The SHE_GE project (Strengthening Higher Education Capacities in Palestine for Gender Equality) has just finished their first project exchange visit that took place at the University of Graz. Project coordinator Prof. Dr. Sanaa Abou-Dagga from the IUG (Islamic University Gaza) travelled to Graz to present the project within the university and at a public lecture.

Project coordinator Rahel Bekele Teklegiorgis as role model for female leadership

Rahel Bekele Teklegiorgis is the principal investigator and leader of the APPEAR project entitled "Technology Enabled Maternal and Child Health Care (TEMACC-Ethiopia)". In 2016 she took the initiative and gathered a team of experts around her. Together they succesfully submitted a project application within the framework of APPEAR.

Workshop "How to become an active agent for human rights" - recap and photo gallery

How to become an active agent for human rights is a crucial question at a time where authoritarian leaders and governments get into power all over the world. In order to defend human rights it is important to have a sound knowledge of this concept. Therefore, our workshop started with an introduction by Jens Kessler and Julia Streimelweger from Amnesty International Austria who presented the general concept of human rights, the history of the human rights movement, and major (international) legal frameworks on human rights.

PhD candidate Sony Baral from Nepal participated at IUFRO 125th Anniversary Conference

In September 2017 Sony Baral had participated in the IUFRO 125th Anniversary Conference in Freiburg, Germany. She got full sponsorship by the IUFRO to present a paper related to her first research objective “Effect of Harvesting in Forest Stand Condition: A case from Nepal.” Furthermore, the presented paper has been further improved and in the process of submission. IUFRO is an international network which promotes global cooperation in forest-related research.

Film Days 2017 - recap and photo gallery

In this event, researchers of the APPEAR project AAPLHRE in Ethiopia that focuses on human rights education gave additional input on current land use rights and land grabbing, developments and drawbacks in this regard. They were invited as speakers for the discussion after the movie "Dead Donkeys Fear No Hyenas".

Elshaday Kifle Woldeyesus - Involvement in human rights events

Elshaday Kifle Woldeyesus started her doctoral studies at the University of Graz in October 2017. She works at the Center for Human Rights at the Addis Ababa University and holds a master’s degree from the United Nations mandated University for Peace in Costa Rica. Having a lot of experiences in human rights Elshaday was invited as speaker for two events in this regard.

'Professional Social Work in East Africa' extended to Eastern Congo

The project PROSOWO II is targeted towards strengthening social work education and practice in countries of the East African Community (Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda). In neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) where poverty and violence is widespread, there is dire need for social work services, too. But there is no single social work training institution in the entire region, nor are there sufficient qualified social work professionals. The few social workers don't have a professional association and only very limited influence on social development and policies.

New article on PROSOWO (Promotion of Professional Social Work in East Africa) published

Helmut Spitzer is a Professor of Social Work at Carinthia University of Applied Sciences, Austria. He is the coordinator of the projects PROSOWO I and II whose objective is to strengthen social work education and practice in East Africa. Recently he has written an article with the title "Social work in East Africa: A mzungu perspective", that was published in the journal International Social Work, a scholarly peer reviewed journal.
