From the 19th to 22nd of March 2018, one of the biggest international social work conferences on the African continent took place in Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda, the Land of a Thousand Hills. Under the theme “Professional Social Work and Sustainable Development in Africa”, 500 researchers, educators, practitioners, policy-makers and students came together in order to discuss key challenges of African societies in the 21st century, to deliberate on the role of social work, and to establish national, regional and international networks. Addis Ababa University (AAU) has recently embarked on different disability related initiatives in order to help students with disabilities succeed in their education. As one of its core activities, the AAU team of the APPEAR project INEDIS has conducted a baseline survey on the status of the inclusion of students with disabilities in the teaching learning as well as services provision in six colleges of the University. Thus, this workshop was organized to share and deliberate on the findings of the baseline research conducted about the status of inclusion of students with disabilities in the six colleges of AAU. In order to make the workshop more comprehensive two other studies conducted by other researchers in AAU about students with disabilities and their experiences were invited and presented.1 min lesen · 22. “It is important to popularize scientific results so that people make informed connections to what is stake in the hope that this can eventually be reflected in the choices they make at all levels.” says APPEAR scholarship holder Sara Kaweesa. Short videos go a long way in doing that. Sara is the narrator of three short videos about conservation agriculture, a topic she is currently working on for her doctoral thesis. “The visitor is the king” is a proverb from Burkina Faso but also used in many other countries. It refers to cultural values in the respective society. Culture can be defined as a way of life that a group of people shares and it builds on the behaviours, beliefs and values that they accept. The objectives of this workshop that was organised for APPEAR scholarship holders were 1) to understand the impact of culture on one’s identity 2) to strengthen awareness for cultural differences and similarities and 3) to develop skills in order to handle intercultural challenges and communication.4 min lesen · 05.
