Scholar nominated for the BOKU Sustainability Award

We congratulate our scholarship holder Ayelech Kidie Mengesha, who was nominated with three other students for this award. Her research focused on the impact of rural land certification on household decision to plant trees and women’s rights to trees: The case of Gozamen district, Ethiopia.

APPEAR Scholars contribute to the new PROSOWO book

Jacqueline Murekasenge and Charles Rutikanga carried out empirical research on culturally specific and innovative social work practices in Burundi and Rwanda. Their research was part of the PROSOWO project and has now been published in the book "Social Work Practice in Africa. Indigenous and Innovative Approaches."

Developing new models of sustainable community cooperation in mountain regions of Georgia

APPEAR scholar Lela Khartishvili from Georgia conducted the first research on community based tourism in Georgia and Armenia. The study reveals the role of tourism in community mobilization and sustainable development. It also revealed the challenges and constrains hampering community tourism development in both countries. The research is based on document analysis, qualitative interviews with different stakeholders and the project experiences.

Paper presentation at a conference for sustainable development in dryland environments

APPEAR scholarship holder Sonnia Musyoka as part of her doctoral work, presented a paper at the Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development in Dryland Environments, that was held at Umma University, in Kenya between 19thand 23rd November 2018. The conference provided an excellent platform for the academia from around the world to engage with the industry, innovators, policy makers, value chain developers, farmers, and service providers among others so that higher education in Africa contributes to solving the problems of natural resources governance in the era of climate change.

PhD Research on aquaculture systems in Kenya

APPEAR scholarship holder Zipporah Gichana, as part of her doctoral work, presented a paper entitled “Effect of Different Biofilters on Performance of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in a Small-Scale Recirculating Aquaculture System” at the 6th Conference of the Pan African Fish and Fisheries Association, held from 24th to 28th of September 2018 in Malawi. The conference theme was “African fish and fisheries: diversity, conservation, sustainable management and development”.

Kevin Obiero's talk entitled "Impacts of water level fluctuations on fisheries of Lake Turkana: World's largest permanent desert lake" was presented during the 8th Species in Ancient Lakes (SIAL8) Conference held from 29th July to 3rd August 2018 in Entebbe Uganda.

PhD research on participatory approaches to curriculum development in higher education in Armenia

This summer APPEAR scholarship holder Hasmik Hovakimyan started her empirical data collection for her PhD research and helped support the APPEAR project BOAA. She started with getting acquainted with the organic sector and its stakeholders. To do so she held a series of participatory focus groups discussing various themes relevant to the project.
