The second module of the series “Artificial intelligence in science communication” was dedicated to the possibilities of generative AI tools for text creation, information evaluation and content presentation. How can such tools make work easier? And how can scientific accuracy and quality be guaranteed at the same time? Together with two experts and the participants, we investigated how generative AI can be used to support the writing and creation process without losing sight of the high demands placed on scientific communication.
First, Dr. Silke Fürst (University of Zurich) gave an insight into the developing field of research around AI in science communication. In her presentation "Work in progress? Developing standards for AI-supported text production in science communication", she pointed out that there is a better research and data situation in journalism research. Although science communication has its own usage scenarios, findings from related disciplines can also be used to develop good practice.
She also presented some examples of current guidelines, such as the results of the German task force “AI in science communication”, including the recommendations for action of #FactoryWisskomm (PDF download).
In the second presentation, Dr. Petra Herczeg (University of Vienna) reported on the development process and the recommendations of the University of Vienna on “Artificial Intelligence in Teaching”, which also include a checklist for the use of tools. She led the working group that published the first version of the guidelines in September 2023 and brought out the second edition in 2024. This took into account technical and legal advances as well as feedback from teachers and students. Petre Herczeg mentioned that different aspects had to be taken into account when developing guidelines, including scientific theory, law, transparency and subject-specific differences, and that the field and tools are constantly evolving.
In the Q&A sessions, participants contributed their own experiences and questions to the two speakers. In a survey conducted during the event, the majority stated that artificial intelligence will play a major role in their professional environment in the future.
The third module of the training series will take place on 5 November 2025, 14:00-16:00 on the topic of “Visualizing research with AI tools”. Registration is already possible here. The event language is German.
