The Sparkling Science project PLASTIC.ALPS has set itself the goal of creating a cross-border data basis on the extent of pollution with (micro)plastics. This goal is to be achieved through a scientific study on various Tyrolean glaciers together with schoolchildren. The data on (micro)plastics will also be collected by citizen scientists. The citizen science component and the schools' contribution can be multiplied through excursions and the use of a littering app called Dreckspotz to map macroplastics in the high mountains. The impact of polymers on biocoenoses (microorganisms, macrozoobenthos) is being investigated through targeted studies - including workshops at the University of Innsbruck together with the schools.
Pupils from Landeck's Clemens Holzmeister secondary school have now had the opportunity to get a taste of filming with project scientists Birgit Sattler and Klemens Weisleitner. The filming for the TV documentary “Ages of Ice” was carried out around 30 meters below the surface of the Hintertux Glacier in a fascinating glacier cave. The young people were able to get an idea of the spectacular conditions in the glacier and exchange ideas with the researchers.
