The overall success rate of the 9th call for all instruments was around 29%. The 9th call was open from March 1st to May 31st, 2022. After an evaluation phase lasting several months, the APPEAR selection board, consisting of seven national and international experts, met at the end of November under the chairmanship of the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) to advise and discuss submitted project and scholarship applications.

After a presentation of the projects by the APPEAR Office, each formally correct project with an average overall rating of over 75 points (out of a maximum of 100 points) was discussed and evaluated according to the APPEAR criteria, guiding principles, 'guiding principles' and 'added values'. In a competitive process, 8 project applications were finally approved for funding, including 6 Academic Partnership and 2 Advanced Academic Partnership projects. The funding volume for these projects totals around EUR 3.1 million.

In addition, 10 Preparatory Funding projects were selected after evaluation by all members of the selection committee. The success rate for the Preparatory Funding projects was 53%, for the Academic Partnership projects 17% and for the Advanced Academic Partnership projects 50%. The contracts for the selected projects and the Preparatory Funding projects are currently being processed. The selected projects will start their activities in January 2023 at the earliest.

In addition,  3 female and 3 male scholarship holders from Armenia, Ethiopia and Uganda were selected from 10 fellowship applications (with a success rate of 60%).

The 10th APPEAR call is expected to open for project submissions on March 1, 2023.
