Henok Marie Shiferaw presented research at 2nd Southern African Geotechnical Conference

He presented his work titled “Repeatability of Triaxial Tests and Reproducibility of Shear Strength Parameters” at the Second Southern African Geotechnical Conference, held from 28–30 May 2025 in Durban, South Africa. The conference brought together a diverse group of researchers, practitioners, consultants, and contractors from across South Africa, as well as keynote speakers from around the globe.

Gerald Kwikiriza publishes papers on impacts of aquaculture on native fish species in Uganda

Since 2022 Gerald Kwikiriza is a PhD candidate at the Institute for Integrative Nature Conservation Research, BOKU University. His research investigates the ecological and genetic impacts of aquaculture on native tilapia species in Uganda’s lake systems. He has recently published two papers.

COVIOCRIM | Report on the 1st project year

The project Countering Violent Crime against Women and Girls in Georgia (COVIOCRIM) aims at building a professional network of “first responders” in order to effectively and sustainably address the challenges of violence against women and girls (VAWG) in Georgia. The project will implement interactive and interdisciplinary training programmes, expand academic qualification opportunities, and establish a Legal Clinic in Tbilisi to provide victims of VAWG with accessible and immediate support. The first year focused on conducting regional training sessions across Georgia in the cities of Batumi, Zugdidi, Borjomi, Telawi, Gori, and Tbilisi.

Pauline Macharia: On the Nexus between Migration and Environment - from Theory to Practice

After earning her PhD from Vienna Technical University in 2021, Pauline Macharia shifted her career path from academia to international development. She joined the International Organization for Migration in Sierra Leone exploring the nexus between human mobility and climate change. Drawing from her own experience as a student migrant, she now advocates for youth empowerment and safe, regular migration pathways to help others avoid the dangers of irregular migration.

Hope Mwanake presented PhD research at EGU General Assembly 2025

This high-profile international conference brought together over 19,000 geoscientists from around the world, covering all disciplines of Earth, planetary, and space sciences. The EGU General Assembly serves as a vibrant forum for scientists, especially early career researchers, to present their work and engage with experts across various geoscience fields.

Yerevan State University and University of Vienna launch APPEAR project on fungal biodiversity

As part of the project activities, a delegation from Yerevan State University visited their Austrian partner institution in April 2025 to launch the collaboration on “Biodiversity Assessment and DNA Barcoding of Mycorrhizal and Xylotrophic Fungi in Forested Regions of Armenia”. This provided a platform to engage in scientific discussions, to outline project objectives and to plan upcoming joint activities.

PhD Research on microplastics in Lake Victoria fish

ReMoDe Project: Stakeholder visit/exchange in Innsbruck/Kaunertal

In December 2024, the University of Innsbruck had the pleasure of hosting the project partner from Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, along with key stakeholders from the involved pilot region, Mestia. Among the Georgian delegates were the Deputy Chairman of the Mestia Municipal Council and representatives from the Svaneti Destination Management Organization (DMO) and the Georgian National Tourism Administration.
