The World Academy of Sciences – TWAS works for the advancement of science in developing countries through research, education, policy and diplomacy. TWAS also recognizes and promotes excellence in scientific research in the developing world. Basanta Raj Adhikari was presented with the award by Prof. Dr. Bai Chunli, President of TWAS, during the 28th annual meeting. Dr. Adhikari has completed his PhD degree at the University of Vienna, Austria in 2009 provided through the North-South Dialogue Scholarship Programme financed by the Austrian Development Cooperation. He has published more than 20 peer-reviewed journals, five books, two book chapters and many technical reports. Moreover, Basanta Raj Adhikari is an outstanding researcher who has dedicated his research to find out the interaction between earthquake and landform with mega structures in the Nepal Himalaya. He is one of the authors of the outstanding researches entitled "Repeated catastrophic valley infill following medieval earthquakes in Nepal Himalaya" and “Glacial lake outburst floods as drivers of fluvial erosion in the Himalaya” which were published in Science in 2016 and 2018, respectively. Dr. Adhikari has been working with different national and international research groups in the field of geo-hazard to understand the dynamics of the Himalayas.

On 29th November, 2018 Dr. Basanta Raj Adhikari has received the "Young Affiliates Award" of the World Academy of Sciences - TWAS in Trieste, Italy. He received this prestigious award for his outstanding contribution in the field of natural science. Basanta Raj Adhikari is an assistant professor and researcher at the Institute of Engineering, Tribhuvan University, Nepal.
