The Citizen Science Award project “Schmetterlingen auf der Spur” aims not only to document a large number of butterflies in Austria but also to identify particularly rare and endangered species. Researchers use this data to compile a “Red List of Butterflies in Austria.”

The participating citizen scientists were very successful in documenting butterflies during the first three weeks of the research period and have already discovered several particularly rare species, including the Duke of Burgundy, the Southern Festoon, the Small Blue, and the Painted Lady Butterfly. A total of 861 butterfly sightings have been submitted via the “naturbeobachtung.at” app/platform since April 1.

By collecting data on endangered and rare species, school classes, youth groups, families, and individuals can make an active contribution to nature and species conservation. Click HERE for more information about the project. The research initiative is open until July 31.
