Knowledge of the Many – Award for outstanding citizen science publications

With the research award ‘Knowledge of the Many – Research Award for Citizen Science’, the German citizen science platform ‘mit:forschen!’ will once again honour three projects in 2025 that have made significant contributions to science through participatory research approaches and the active involvement of citizens.

First place went to Dr Dirk Knoche for his publication on the birch tree species in Central Europe, which collected data on water, carbon and biodiversity processes in collaboration with dedicated citizen scientists. Second place went to Sven Bittenbinder for developing the ‘Research Buddy’ platform, which connects international students and older citizens. Third place was awarded to Dr Melike Şahinol for her research on 3D-printed prostheses for children with upper limb differentiation, in which children, families and makers conducted research as experts in their own lives.

The award ceremony will take place during the PartWiss conference in Leipzig in mid-November. The research award sends a clear signal about the diversity of scientific approaches and the potential of citizen science in fields such as forest ecology, human-computer interaction and the sociology of technology.
