The call, titled “Strengthening the capacity of citizen science in biodiversity observation”, contributes to the goals of the European Green Deal, the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, and the Nature Restoration Regulation. It aims to enhance public engagement in biodiversity monitoring and to support climate change mitigation and adaptation at the local level.
Call objectives include:
Strengthening and coordinating citizen science initiatives across Europe
Involving experts in taxonomy, genomics, IT, education, and communication
Integrating citizen-generated data into taxonomic research and environmental policy
Developing harmonised standards, digital tools, and incentive systems for sustained engagement
Expanding biodiversity monitoring to lesser-known species and habitats (e.g. using eDNA, apps, AI)
Projects should also focus on including young people, hard-to-reach communities, and vulnerable groups. Practical approaches such as school kits, participatory apps, or training materials are encouraged.
Cooperation is expected with Biodiversa+, the Knowledge Centre for Biodiversity, BioAgora, and the upcoming EU Biodiversity Observation Coordination Centre (EBOCC). Collaboration with the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA) and other relevant platforms is also recommended.
