Organic farming in the Caucasus – Armenia's path to sustainable agriculture

Science and research play a central part in development cooperation between Austria and Armenia, particularly when it comes to sustainable agriculture. Ö1 Campus Radio, 25 April 2025, 8–9 p.m.

Armenia is experiencing a green awakening: the SOAA – Strengthening Organic Agriculture in Armenia project is laying the foundation for sustainable agricultural education. In cooperation between the Armenian National Agrarian University (ANAU) and the University of Natural Resources and Applied Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) a master's programme in organic agriculture that combines theory and practice has been developed.

One highlight is the Akunq Student Farm in the village of Akunq. Here students not only learn about organic farming but also produce certified organic products. The farm also serves as a testing ground and advice centre for local farmers.

Science and research play a central part in development cooperation between Austria and Armenia, in particular in the field of sustainable agriculture and strengthening local capacities. Through the exchange of knowledge, the promotion of innovation, and cooperation between higher education institutions and research institutions long-term solutions to the challenges in Armenia are developed.

The project focuses on participatory education, international cooperation and practical research. It not only strengthens academic education but also promotes the development of the agricultural sector in Armenia.
