Project Overview

The main objective of this project is to develop trainers' competencies in greening TVET in the polytechnic colleges and contribute to the green economy initiatives in Ethiopia. The project is aimed at making TVET education play its key role in protecting the environment and creating conducive conditions for a green and fair transition. The project is a two-year project funded by APPEAR and implemented by a consortium of three institutions from Austria and Ethiopia. Methodologically the project adopts Majumdar’s (2010) five greening TVET dimensions, and UNDP’s (2009) capacity development model. A descriptive survey design will be used to identify capacity gaps across five geographically diverse Ethiopian polytechnic colleges. Thirty trainers from each college (150 total) will be randomly selected for a questionnaire assessing green TVET skills and competencies, based on themes like green curriculum, campus, research, community, and culture. The survey, translated into Amharic, Afan Oromo, and Somali, includes scaled and open-ended items. Additionally, Key Informant Interviews with MoLS experts, deans, and deputy deans will explore challenges in green TVET implementation, trainer background, motivation, and institutional readiness. Gender balance will be ensured, with 50% female participation across both questionnaires and KIIs. The quantitative data collected from the survey will be analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. On top of this, thematic and content analysis will be used to analyze and interpret the qualitative data.

A Capacity Development Project on Greening TVET Get Started

Based on the partnership between the two Sister Universities: Addis Ababa University (AAU) and the University of Klagenfurt, team of experts from the College of Education and Language Studies at AAU and Ministry of Labor and Skills (MoLS)/Federal TVET Institute (FTI) have recently launched the project "A Capacity Development of Trainers on Greening TVET in the Polytechnic Colleges of Ethiopia" (Project 370). This project is related to Green Legacy of the Ethiopian Government. Specifically, the project aims to assess the capacity gaps in Greening TVET at polytechnic colleges and benchmark best practices from Austria and South Africa.

For this purpose, a team consisting of four professionals from AAU (namely, Dr Jeilu Omer Hussien – Academic Vice President (AVP), Dr. Befekadu Zeleke Kidane – Team Leader, Dr. Yekunoamlak Alemu Woldeyohanis – Team Member, and Dr. Demoze Degefa Alemu - Team Member) travelled to Austria for kick-off meeting and signing of memorandum of understanding (MoU) from July 15 to 20, 2025. The Ethiopian delegates headed by the AVP participated in the kick-off meeting and MoU signing ceremony. On top of this, discussions were held on future academic and research partnership at Vienna APPEAR/OeAD office and University of Klagenfurt.
