“Wenn Elefanten kämpfen..." new German book on social work in Africa's Great Lake Region and event

The new German language monography addresses prospects and challenges of the social work profession in Africa’s Great Lakes region
1 min read · 12. April 2023

Based on research and field visits over a period of 25 years, the book with the (translated) title  "When elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers” provides practical insights in country-specific contexts and selected fields of action in Burundi, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya. Thereby it becomes evident how difficult, sometimes even impossible it is to fulfill the professional and ethical mandate of social work against the background of widespread poverty, political violence, and gross human rights violations. A major concern of the author is a critical reflection of Eurocentric perspectives and the discussion of indigenous social work approaches. The book was written by Prof Helmut Spitzer from Carinthia University of Applied Sciences, former coordinator of the APPEAR project PROSOWO II.
