Based on the APPEAR-funded project Professional Social Work in East Africa | PROSOWO, the international academic team Dr. Janestic Twikirize from Uganda and Prof. Helmut Spitzer from Austria managed to publish an article in the prominent ‘Journal of Rural Studies’. The article "Social innovations in rural communities in Africa’s Great Lakes region. A social work perspective" provides empirically based insights into rural social innovations in Rwanda and Uganda and aims to contribute to some under-researched aspects at the intersection of social innovation research, rural studies, and social work practice.

It is not the first collaboration of this kind between the two social work scholars: In the past ten years, the authors have co-edited two books and co-published a number of journal articles and book chapters, and jointly organized social work conferences in both East Africa and Austria. Their latest book is entitled: "Social work practice in Africa. Indigenous and innovative approaches".

The PROSOWO project officially ended in 2019, but as can be seen in this case: International partnerships have the potential to be vividly maintained beyond the span of such projects.
