APPEAR at the Austrian science and research fair “Lange Nacht der Forschung 2016”

APPEAR took part in the Austrian science and research fair Lange Nacht der Forschung 2016 and was represented by one of its projects: "Strengthening of Higher Education, Research and Community Outreach in Agro-Ecology in the Rwenzori Region in Western Uganda".

During this event the project team from the BOKU provided not only information related to their research, but also tastings of a tea that acts as a malaria prophylaxis. This organic produce is known as Artimisia tea and is the result of an earlier cooperation with the Mountains of the Moon University that aimed at researching a low cost alternative to the conventional malaria prophylaxis, which is too expensive for small-scale farmers.

The Rwenzori region in Western Uganda is endowed with natural resources, reliable rainfall and an overall richness in biodiversity. Nevertheless, the over exploitation of its natural resources is a central challenge for the region. The APPEAR project which is a cooperation between the BOKU and the Mountains of the Moon University therefore aims to strengthen small-scale subsistence farming systems through joint agro-ecological learning. By doing so the challenge of over exploitation of natural resources - for example through high deforestation rates – will be adequately addressed.
