While still a student, she founded the Kibwezi Center for Sustainability. This NGO promotes environmental conservation, gender equality, access to education, climate change adaptation and mitigation, and public health services. Regular activities include seedballs broadcasting and tree planting to raise awareness and combat climate change.

Sonnia Nzilani Musyoka from Kenya completed her PhD on the “The potential of earthworm and agro-industrial wastes to replace conventional animal proteins sources in fish feed production” at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna in 2020. She received her Erasmus Mundus Masters degrees in “Water and Coastal Management” and “Environmental Assessment and Management” from the University of Cadiz in Spain and the University of Bologna in Italy. After her doctoral studies in Austria, she resumed teaching at the South Eastern Kenya University and was promoted to Head of the Department of Hydrology and Aquatic Sciences.

In November 2022, she took a big step forward in her career when she was appointed County Minister of Lands, Urban Planning and Development, Environment and Climate Change in Makueni County, Kenya. She feels honored to have this opportunity because it gives her the platform to continue the conservation work, she has started earlier. Being in a position of decision making and policy formulation, she can use her knowledge to work for the communities and to help combat, mitigate and adapt to climate change.

Sonnia has more than 15 years of local and international experience in consultancy and training on capacity building for fisheries and aquaculture as well as climate smart agriculture practices for sustainable livelihoods.
